FAQ? Frequently asked questions?

What is the Interest Rate on Late Payments & Can it be Waived in Certain Circumstances?

Interest is 8% per yr. on the first $1,500.00 of delinquency; balances more than $1,500.00 have an interest rate of 18% per yr. The 18% rate stays in place until the taxes are brought current. Interest is charged from the 1st of the month that payment is due, or date of last payment. Also, if the total balance (tax & interest) exceeds $10,000.00 on December 31, a 6% penalty is added to the amount due to the Borough. NJ statute NJSA 54:4-67 states that if payment isn’t received by the end of business hours on the 10th day of the grace period, interest is charged, the collector must have physical possession of payment; NO postmarks accepted. And NO, the statute does not permit  waiver or cancellation of any interest charges. NJSA 54:4-64 states that failure to receive a bill does not nullify the tax due; it is the property owner's responsibility to find out from the proper official (Tax Collector) the amount due. If you have recently purchased the property, or lost your bill, please call the Tax Collectors Office to obtain the amount due & request a copy of the bill.

When Will I Receive My Tax Bill & Where Do I Send Payments?

Tax bills are mailed ONCE a year (July). Tax bills are prepared after the extended tax duplicate is delivered from the county in June.  If tax bills are issued after the statutory mailing date of June 14th, the payment date after which interest will be charged back to will be 25 days after mailing or the 10-day grace period whichever is later. Payment due dates are August 1st, November 1st, February 1st, and May 1st.  Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve the owner from paying property taxes. Checks should be made payable to: Borough of Helmetta and mailed to: Borough of Helmetta, 51 Main St., Helmetta NJ 08828

Can I View, Print or Pay my bill Online?

Yes, you may view &/or print your bill for free. You may PAY online by check for a small fee, or credit card in which the fee is based on a percentage of taxes owed.  View-Pay-Print Bill here
